We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it. as for the lines. its a swatch i created in illustrator. i took it from a swatch we had at work (used for textures/diagrams) and adapted the line weight/colour. its basically a small square with the lines running across it, chuck it in the swatch panel, and voila!
thing is you need to align the lines so they continue the pattern. its hard to explain. try a search on google or something. if you can't find anything helpful, gimme a shout and i'll email it (the swatch) to ya.

yeah, i went into photoshop with this, with the intention of doing more than the glow effect, but my eyes were starting to droop (was about 2ish at this point).
I tried a few custom letterforms before hand, but i wasn't felling any of them. so i just decided to whack out some Avant Garde innit haha.
may have to revamp when i get the time.
